Five Tips to Help Relieve Shingles Pain

Shingles is an infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same one that causes chicken pox. If you've had chicken pox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue near your spinal cord and brain, and may appear as shingles years later. The rash usually emerges as a single stripe of blisters that wraps around the left or right side of the torso. Although it isn't life- threatening, shingles can be very painful. There are vaccines that can help reduce the risk of shingles, however if you do become infected, it's important that you manage the painful flareups. Here are some helpful tips.

  1. Take an oatmeal bath in a tub of cool water to relieve painful blisters. Colloidal oatmeal is made from oats that are ground into fine powder, which will also help alleviate itching. You can do this daily to help manage symptoms.
  2. Apply cool compresses to your blisters. Run a clean washcloth under cool water and apply to the affected area for twenty minutes at at time. Not only will this help ease the pain, it will keep the area clean and free from infection.
  3. Apply Milkweed Balm twice a day, morning and night.  The anti-inflammatory ingredients and antioxidants in Milkweed Balm may provide you some much-needed comfort, while also nourishing your skin. The more you use it, the better it works.
  4. Wear loose clothing. You will feel more comfortable in relaxed fits made from natural fibers like cotton and linen. Avoid wearing anything tight that will irritate your blisters.
  5. Engage in light activities. Staying active by walking or doing gentle exercies will make you feel better and take your mind off the pain.

You can't wish away an outbreak of shingles, but you can make yourself more comfortable as you ride it out. Self-care is important to treat your body and ease your mind.
