Sinus, Cluster, Tension, & Migraine Headaches – Know The Difference

Headaches can range in severity from mild discomfort to debilitating pain. Some people may not realize that different types of headaches can have different symptoms and treatments. If you can identify the type of headache you're having, you can find the right cure and maybe even prevent it from happening in the future. Although there are technically over 150 types of headaches that have been identified, these are the most common.

Tension

This type of headache can cause mild to moderate pain and comes and goes over time. There are not usually any other symptoms that accompany this time of headache. Reducing stress, applying hot and cold compresses, stretching, and massage can help to relieve tension in your back and neck, which can lessen the symptoms. Some people opt to take over the counter medications to tackle the pain too.

Sinus

If you notice a deep and constant pain in your forehead, cheekbones, or bridge of your nose, you may be suffering from a sinus headache. Other symptoms may include a runny nose with a green or yellow discharge, and fever. You can alternate warm and cold compresses for relief, but you may also require an antibiotic, antihistamine, or decongestant for a short period of time.

Migraine

Migraines are intense headaches that cause pounding and throbbing pain. They can last for several hours or days and may occur a few times a month. In addition to the intense pain, other symptoms may include sensitivity to light, noise, or smells; nausea or vomiting; and stomach upset. Many sufferers require prescription medication to manage migraines. It's also essential to avoid migraine triggers such as stress, changes in sleep patterns, certain foods, and sensory stimuli.

Cluster

A burning or piercing pain behind or around one eye is likely a cluster headache. This type of headache can be throbbing or constant and is the most severe. The pain can be so excruciating that most people find themselves unable to sit still during an attack, which can last 15 minutes to three hours. They are called cluster headaches because they usually occur one to three times per day during a cluster period. Along with the pain, the eyelid droops, the eye reddens, the pupil gets smaller, and the eye may tear. Men are more likely to get cluster headaches than women. Migraine medications, steroids, and other preventative medications may help those who suffer.
