Tennis Elbow & How to Help Minimize The Pain

Tennis elbow, also called lateral epicondylitis, is a painful condition that involves the tendons that join the forearm muscles to the outside of the elbow. Although a small percentage of tennis players have the condition, it is actually more common among people performing repetitive movements. Chefs, painters, carpenters, and auto workers, among others, are particularly prone to developing tennis elbow due to the repetition required in these occupations.

The most common symptom of tennis elbow is pain on the outside of the elbow. Over time, the outside of your elbow may become too painful to touch. Eventually, you may have difficulty gripping or lifting things. Tennis elbow may occur in one or both arms. If left untreated, tennis elbow can become a chronic condition.

If you suspect you have tennis elbow, your doctor will ask you to perform a few simple actions such as straightening your wrist against pressure and checking for pain in parts of your arm. The doctor may also order an MRI scan to confirm the diagnosis. Tennis elbow can usually be treated with exercise, physical therapy, and pain medication.
