Growing pains is a term used to describe many things, but they are actually real. During growth spurts, some children experience pain in their legs, specifically in their thighs, calves and back of their knees. Even though bone growth doesn’t cause pain, their muscles, tendons and ligaments are growing too, especially if they’re not growing at the same pace. It can be scary and uncomfortable if your child is experiencing this kind of pain. What can you do to help?
First, make sure there aren’t any underlying causes contributing to the pain by taking your child to the doctor for a physical examination. If the doctor rules out other issues, there are steps you can take to keep your child comfortable during this transition period. Since growing pains often occur during the night, it is wise to provide some comfort before bedtime.
Simple stretching can help achy muscles. Make it an activity you can do together each night before bed. A warm bath will help too. Before your child goes to sleep, massage Milkweed Balm on their legs. The anti-inflammatory properties of the milkweed seed oil may help soothe the muscles during the night so your child wakes up comfortable and well rested.
Growing pains usually disappear in the morning and return by late afternoon or evening. Milkweed Balm can be used a few times a day. If the pain persists until morning or is accompanied by a fever, swollen joints, weakness or loss of appetite, it could me something more serious and your doctor should be consulted.
